History news flash; Amethyst gained its name from an Ancient Greek word meaning "not intoxicated." Ancient Greeks and Romans believed that amethyst had received its colour from the God of wine Dionysus, who poured the wine over clear crystal. They drank wine from goblets decorated with amethyst as an amulet to remind them of indulgence and addiction. Amethyst was so sought after and rare that it was as expensive as diamonds!
